What is Death Education?

Death Education is essential for anyone who needs to communicate confidently and effectively with someone before or after a death or loss. Whether the person is a child, adult or elderly, CEDAR will teach you how to make difficult conversations easy, compassionate and meaningful.

CEDAR will expand your knowledge of death, dying and loss. This course is suitable for anyone, but will be of particular benefit to those dealing regularly with a grief situation in a professional setting such as adult carers, health care workers, GPs, nurses, public sector workers (police, fire & ambulance), legal professionals (magistrates, barristers, solicitors),teachers and counsellors, veterinary sector workers, community workers and funeral workers.

Dr Wester’s course is a highly interactive course with visual aids and group participation. Her enthusiasm for this topic is both effective and contagious. The topics covered in the course include:

  • What is death?
  • Why talking about death is important
  • Notions of time and why it matters to the bereaved
  • How parents grieve and how children grieve
  • Social and cultural aspects of death & loss
  • The social history of death and why they matter today
  • Myths about death and how they influence our responses to death
  • Different experiences of grief
  • Understanding weeping and crying
  • Some helpful tips and guidance
